Tools for the three jobs that fill a teaching week

Every tool in Mark Smarter started as a real task from a real classroom. Here is what is inside.

Mark

Mark student work
Upload a photo of a handwritten answer, a document or typed text. Mark Smarter checks it against your answer key and rubric, then suggests a mark and feedback for each criterion. You review it and make the final call.
Build answer keys
Enter a question, compare model answers side by side, combine the best parts into one key and save it for next term.

Teach

Classroom timers Free
Count-down and count-up timers for clean-up, transitions, think time, tests and lunch. Big, clear digits for the classroom screen, with a bell your class can hear across the room.
YouTube transcripts
Turn a lesson video into a timestamped transcript you can read, quote and adapt for your students.

For Mark Smarter members

Make your own lessons and worksheets, on the topic you’re teaching

Tell Mark Smarter the grade, the subject and what you’re covering this week. In about a minute you have a lesson plan, a student worksheet, or both, ready to change, print or save.

  • Lesson plans for Kindergarten to Grade 8 in every subject, in English or French, with themes for the school year from Back to School and Orange Shirt Day to Halloween, Pi Day and Earth Day.
  • Worksheets that fit your class: one to three pages, from easier to challenge, with the question types you choose: number questions, word problems, reading passages, matching, multiple choice and more.
  • Math pictures drawn for you: fraction bars and circles, number lines, arrays, clocks and base-ten blocks that match each question exactly.
  • Answer key on its own page, so the student copy never shows the answers.
  • Edit anything, then print it or download it as a Word or PDF file, and keep it in My lessons for next year.

Built by education professionals, for educators

Mark Smarter is created by Jamie Dalgetty and built by education professionals. Each tool begins with a question teachers ask every week: how do I get through this pile, keep this lesson on time, or find a plan for tomorrow?

  • Your professional judgement comes first. Suggested marks and feedback are a starting point. Nothing is final until you say so.
  • Made for real classroom routines. Clean-up, transitions, tests and lunch are ready to go, because those are the moments teachers time every day.
  • Careful with student information. We keep as little as possible and explain plainly what is stored.

Questions teachers ask

What is Mark Smarter?

Mark Smarter is a set of web-based tools for teachers, teacher candidates and other educators. It helps with the jobs that fill a teaching week: marking student work against a rubric, building answer keys, timing classroom routines and planning lessons.

Who is Mark Smarter for?

Classroom teachers from Kindergarten through college, supply and occasional teachers, teacher candidates in education programs, tutors and homeschooling parents. If you teach, plan or mark, it is built for you.

Can I make my own lesson plans and worksheets?

Yes, with an account. Pick the grade, subject and topic, a theme such as Halloween or Earth Day, and how you like to teach, and Mark Smarter writes a complete lesson plan, a student worksheet, or both. Worksheets can be one to three pages with an answer key on its own page, and math picture questions like fraction bars and number lines are drawn for you. Change anything, then save, print or download it as a Word or PDF file. Please read every lesson and answer key before you use it.

Is Mark Smarter free?

The classroom timers, the printable worksheet makers and Lesson Plan Ideas are free and need no account. The full teacher toolkit is opening gradually: request an account and we will email you when it is ready. A few marking and writing tools connect to outside services through your own account with them, so any usage charges come from those providers.

Does it mark my students' work for me?

No. It suggests a mark and feedback against your answer key or rubric so the first pass goes faster. You review it, change it or ignore it. The final mark is always the teacher's decision.

Does it work for Canadian classrooms?

Yes. The tools support Canadian and American spelling, and Lesson Plan Ideas includes lesson plans in French as well as English.

How do I get an account?

Fill in the short request form with your name, email and role. Every request is reviewed by a person, and you will get an email as soon as your account is approved.

Spend less time on the pile and more time teaching.
